Agnes is passionate about good financial management and analysis. Before Balloon she worked at a Savings and Credit Cooperative as an internal auditor in charge of risk management. Prior to that, she worked as an administrative assistant for Human Rights Uphold Uganda. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in commerce (Accounting) from Makerere University.
Amanda is a trustee for Balloon Ventures and Managing Director of the French operation of HW International Group, an insurance brokerage with offices across Europe, North America and in Australia and Hong Kong. With many years’ experience working in the insurance industry, both as a broker and also for one of the largest insurers Aviva, she is qualified and regulated to work directly in the UK, French and Swiss insurance markets. At sector level, Amanda works with global and large corporate, chemical, real estate and fine arts clients, providing client advice, developing customer-focused propositions and managing complex programmes. She also has a number of start-up, scale-up and family office clients, seeking risk management support as they grow.
Amy is the Group Finance Director at Balloon Ventures responsible for all aspects of financial planning and management. Amy joined Balloon in 2017. Before Balloon, Amy worked for 8 years at PwC progressing to Manager level. At PwC Amy firstly worked in Audit before moving into Forensic Services where she specialised in developing anti-money laundering policies for global investment banks and conducting reviews of internal controls and processes. Amy qualified as an ACA Chartered Accountant in 2013 and graduated with a 1st in Business Accounting and Finance from Newcastle University.
Benitah is a certified Financial Analyst, with qualifications in accounting, customer service and administrative roles with 4+ years of experience in resolving complex customer inquiries and coordinating all administrative functions at Ecobank Uganda. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Makerere University, holds a FMVA Certificate from CFI and is currently pursuing ACCA Level 2. Before Balloon, Ecobank Uganda.
Claire is a Finance, Audit and Taxation enthusiast with an honors degree in Business Administration, majoring in Accounting. Claire did her internship at the Ministry of Water and Environment as an accounts assistant. She also volunteered with Reproductive Health Uganda in various leadership roles.
Clare’s experience in Accounting and Finance spans over 8 years. She is currently a Senior Investment Manager at Balloon Ventures, managing a portfolio of businesses. Previously, she worked with Ngamia Capital as Portfolio Manager and Iungo Capital as Portfolio Accountant, supporting the post investment process. She also worked at AAR Healthcare Uganda where she served in the capacities of Payables Accountant and later Financial Accountant. Clare has a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and Finance from Kyambogo University and is currently completing Level 3 of CPA(U) from the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda. She is passionate about ESG compliance, impact financing and the establishment of proper accounting practices for SMEs.
David’s experience in Banking spans over 9 years. He currently serves as Legal and Recoveries Manager at Balloon Ventures Uganda. Before Balloon, David served as a Business Administrator for 4 years, a commercial loans officer for 4 and half years; and an Agricultural loans officer for 18 months all with Centenary Bank where he grew the loan book of over $6 million. He holds a Bachelors of Agribusiness Management from Makerere university.
Dennis is passionate about credit analysis and creating impact in people’s lives. Before Balloon, he worked as a Wealth Creation Officer at Musoni microfinance where he was responsible for a portfolio of $200,000. And prior he worked at FEP Sacco as a Loan Officer. Dennis graduated from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology with Bachelor of Commerce ( Accounting) and is currently at the Intermediate level of CPA.
Doug co-founded Balloon Ventures in 2012 and led operations across numerous programs. He managed Balloon’s £4.7m multi-year UKAID project delivered across 11 communities in Ghana, Kenya and Uganda. The project, which combined business consultancy with low interest loans to informal sector entrepreneurs, was rated A or A+ in all DFID Annual Reviews. Doug has also coordinated an external randomised control trial to evaluate the project’s impact, being implemented by researchers at Stanford University. As a trainer in enterprise and innovation, Doug has delivered programmes to staff at Citibank, Fujitsu, BT and Cisco Group. He holds a BA from the University of Warwick and an MSc from University College London. Doug transitioned out of Balloon in 2022 to pursue a PhD at UCL but given his expertise still acts as a Board Advisor.
Jonathan is passionate about good financial management, taxation and audit. Before joining Balloon he worked in manufacturing at Elgon Bottling Company Limited for five years as a founding Production Manager and later Head of Internal Audit. By the time of his exit the company had become the leading regional distributor of packaged drinking mineral water. Jonathan holds a Bachelors degree in Economics from Kyambogo university and is currently completing level 3 of CPA(U) from the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda.
Gladys is a finance specialist with a passion for monitoring and evaluation. She works with Balloon recruiting SMEs for investment support. She previously worked as a business development officer with Valuemax Consulting ltd in charge of business recruitment and business forums for professional consultancy and as an administrator with Kenya Institute of monitoring and evaluation studies. Gladys also worked with SCODE, an NGO that deals in renewable energy, mainly in data collection, report writing and community empowerment. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from Egerton University and an MA in Monitoring and Evaluation from Mount Kenya University.
Godwill is passionate about risk and financial management. Before joining Balloon Godwill worked with Standard Signs Contractors Limited as an accounts assistant and assistant in stores and Registry. Godwill also worked with Airtel Uganda as a Telesales Executive and Coca Cola Beverages Africa as a Sales and Marketing Executive. Godwill holds a Bachelors degree in Commerce majoring in Finance at Makerere University Business School and is currently at level 2 of CPA from the Institute of Public Accountants of Uganda.
Isima currently serves as Business Development Manager at Balloon Ventures. Prior he served as Manager at Reena Print Limited and before as an Accounts Assistant at Mount Masaba High School. He has six years’ experience in financial management, Analysis & statutory compliance.
He is a Certified Associate Member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (CPA-U), holds a BBS-Accounting from Islamic University In Uganda; and is Currently pursuing a certificate in Financial Analysis (FMVA) with the Corporate Financial Institute (CFA-Level 3).
Joseph works at Balloon to build and assess a pipeline of investees. Before Balloon, Joseph served as a Credit Manager for 4 years, Credit supervisor for 2 Years and Credit Officer for 6 years with Development Microfinance where he dealt with over 6,000 SME’s and a Loan Book of over $2million. Prior to this he also worked as a Community Development Officer for 2 years. He holds a Bachelors in Social Sciences (Social Administration), a Masters In Business Administration (MBA) from Makerere University and is currently pursuing a postgraduate diploma in Project Planning and Management at UMI.
Josh is the co-founder of Balloon Ventures, a social enterprise working to create good jobs by growing locally owned businesses. Josh co-founded Balloon in 2012 after working in Kenya researching the post-election violence of 2007-08. An experienced entrepreneur, he has conceived and scaled a diverse range of business models including volunteering programs delivering major public and private sector contracts and tech platforms which democratise access to Balloon’s entrepreneurship curriculum globally. Most recently, Josh joined forces with Oscar to re-launch Balloon as a financial institution to innovate a new investment product that unlocks the potential of local SMEs. Josh now leads on fundraising, investor relations and R&D. Josh was appointed the youngest ever Visiting Fellow at Cass Business School, where he taught entrepreneurship to MBA students. He holds a BA from the University of Bristol and an MA from the University of British Columbia.
Kenneth has 15 years of experience in Audit, both as an internal and external auditor. He began is career at FINCA Uganda where he worked for 6 years. He then joined HORARD Uganda to head the Internal Audit Department. Afterwards he worked with Development Microfinance Uganda Ltd as Head of Department. Kenneth holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Makerere University and is currently completing Level 2 of CPA(U) from the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda.
Mackline currently serves a Portfolio Manager for Balloon Ventures Uganda. Prior to this, she worked at Post Bank Uganda as a Banking Officer. Before Joining Post Bank Uganda in 2020, she was a Tax Consultant at MAZARS Uganda. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Computing from Makerere University Business School and currently pursuing her CPA.
Melinda retired in 2010 after 16 years as Chief Executive of one of the UK’s largest care and housing providers. During this time she managed 17,000 homes and a team of 7,200 staff. Upon her retirement, the company had a turnover of £200m. Melinda now works with Balloon providing strategic and operational support.
Keter is a credit analyst with over 5 years experience in credit management. He currently works as a Senior Loans Officer at Balloon Ventures where he provides administrative support to credit and risk management. He also leads the revenue assurance department where he reviews all credit requests and ensures compliance with standard regulations before disbursement. He previously worked at FEP Sacco Society Ltd as a loans officer. He holds a bachelor of commerce from Egerton University.
Michaels has a professional training background in Banking and Financial Services with over ten years’ experience in the Capital Markets (Kenya). He has previously worked for Suntra Investment Bank as an Equities Dealer and has extensive knowledge in the Securities Market operations in Kenya, having taken part in the OTC trading, listings and IPOs of several publicly traded companies. He is passionate about financial inclusion in the Kenya and his skillset includes dealing/securities trading, financial advisory, portfolio management and client relationship management.
Prior to Balloon Naima served as an Auditor and Tax Consultant at Rhino Business Consultants in alliance with Timo Associates. She has over 5 years’ experience in Accounting, Auditing, Tax Consultancy and Statutory Compliance. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Management Science from Kyambogo University and is currently pursuing CPA (U) at Level III with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU).
Oscar joined Balloon Ventures in 2017 to lead the launch of Balloon as a financial institution. From piloting and developing the Balloon model independently, Oscar now leads a 20+ strong team and heads investment strategy and operations. Under his leadership Balloon has made over $3m of loans with 95%+ repayment rates. Before Balloon Ventures, Oscar served as the Regional Business Development Manager in charge of Western Uganda at Uganda Telecom with 23 districts under his supervision. Prior to this Oscar worked for 8 years in the banking sector serving as a Personal Banker and Corporate Relationship Officer and later Branch Manager at Barclays and then Bank of Africa. Here he was responsible for $2m of deposits and a loan book of about $1.2m. He holds an MBA from Makerere University.
Prabhay is a Trustee for Balloon Ventures and a Project Leader at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), with a focus on M&A transactions and investor-lens work. He has held previous roles in sustainable investing at Morgan Stanley and trade finance at Citigroup. Prabhay is passionate about supporting entrepreneurs and worked on Balloon’s 2017 Volunteer Africa program as well as volunteering in Kenya in 2013. He holds an MBA from Columbia Business School, where he graduated with Dean’s Honours, and a BSc from University College London.
Raymond is Public Administration and Management Graduate from Uganda Christian University. He began his career at Legal Awareness Initiative and then joined Challenges Worldwide Uganda as an Associate Consultant where he worked with over 20 SME’s doing business diagnostics and advisory. Raymond has also served at PR Director and Membership Growth Officer of the Rotaract Club of Kampala Central. He is currently pursuing a certificate in Financial Analysis and completing a Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management from the Chartered Management Institute.
Richard Wafula has 24 years experience in Finance and Accounting. He begun his career with Uganda Posts and Telecommunication, the only government Parastatal at the time as a Regional Accountant. He later Joined Uganda Telecom Company a government entity as a Regional Accountant where he worked for 9 years. He later joined Development Microfinance Ltd as Finance Manager where he worked for a period of 13 years. He is currently working as a Finance Manager at Balloon Ventures Uganda. Richard holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Studies from Islamic University in Uganda and a Diploma in Business Studies from Makerere University.
Sophie holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration and a post graduate diploma in financial management from Uganda Management Institute and is currently pursuing an MBA. She’s a professional banker with over 6years of experience having worked at Diamond trust bank and Brac Uganda, 4 years of which she served as a Branch manager managing a portfolio of over Ugx.5 billion. Here passion is seeing positive changes through economic and social programs that enable people to realize their potential.
Virginia’s passions are data and entrepreneurship. She initially joined Balloon as an Investment Manager before taking over leadership of the Kenyan office in 2022. She previously worked in the Capital Markets at Suntra Investment Bank for 9 years in various capacities as an equity researcher, portfolio manager, investment banker and corporate finance. She has also worked for The Exchange Africa, an East African financial publisher as a coordinator for the Kenyan Bureau. She hold a MSc in Social Statistics from University of Nairobi and a BSc in Actuarial Science from JKUAT.
Will is a Trustee for Balloon Ventures and Human Capital Manager at Helios Investment Partners, the pan-African private investment firm, where he partners with 25+ portfolio companies across questions of talent, compensation, organisation structure, corporate governance etc. He previously worked for Skillcapital, an executive search firm focused on private equity backed portfolio companies. Will is passionate about entrepreneurship and the development of the private sector in Africa, working on Balloon’s 2013 and 2014 programmes and spending time as an Investment Associate in the Kenya Office in 2018. He holds a MA in International Relations from Kings College London and a BA History from Exeter University.
